the Missing April Megapost

April was a kind of busy month for me. But I did manage to get in some practice doing things I’m just not used to, and start focusing a little more on working from imagination.

So let’s play catch-up in one mega, mostly chronological post:

A speedpaint done exploring some new things I’d learned about lighting. Done with less reference than I had recently been using.

As you might have noticed from the blog, I don’t tend to draw animals often. So it’s a bit of gloating, but for my first time drawing cockatoos (piecing these guys together from reference and imagination), I’m fairly pleased with this one.

The background was not such a success though 😛

This one was inspired by my own personal Easter weekend alarm clock. Thanks, guys.

I’ve always been a bit nervous about exaggerated caricature – it feels a little like the extremely skilled but at least moderately evil twin of portraiture. One very cool cartoonist on Twitter suggested these were more cartoony portraits, which I’m a little more comfortable with.

Although I really do want to crawl up on character #1’s cheeks and fall asleep. *_*

Practice with environments, something I very much need. Neither from reference.

A bit closer to my painting roots after a bit of a mad week – simple, four tone painting (not including eyes, background or clothing), form and lighting from reference. Lately I’ve noticed that I seem to be able to crack out of a tough art time more quickly when I’m painting my favourite muse…funny that.

And to cap off mega-post, a quick speedpaint.

Goodnight, everybody!

Speedpaint – March 26 2012

I have a livestream channel, and last night I livestreamed a sketch! (You can watch it here)

Which sounds a bit dirty but in truth, all I did was record a video of me drawing.

Referenced from a photo. My big challenge with this was that I tried to limit it to four values only.

Me being me and nitpicky, I also edited the picture a little bit more after the video stopped and I thought I was done with it. :B As a likeness, I can think of a few things that could definitely use improvement. Otherwise, it turned out okay 🙂

february 29 2012

happy belated February 29!

Quick paint. Quicker to do than the previous Pirate Princess piece, but much tighter and fewer messy impressionist-y strokes. Happier with this one, feels like I’m properly getting back in the painting saddle. Picked colours pretty much the same way I picked for the Princess piece, and most of my other paintings, but everything seems to have come together much more nicely in this one…perhaps I am learning, after all!

Speed challenge: Character concept design in an hour

I recently attended the Melbourne Concept Design Workshop. Much, much love and a great brain-opening experience, but I’ll not gush about it in this post.

On one of the last days, one of our teachers ran a concept challenge for the class: create a character for a game and according to a brief, in what was supposed to be an hour but probably ran a little bit over.

So I tried my hand at applying everything I’d learned over the workshop, and here’s the result.

Happy Lunar New Year 2012

Happy Lunar new year, everyone! Having two new years is more fun – it lets you do over those resolutions you made the first time around 😉 I’ve got one resolution so far this year, and that’s to be able to do forward splits…

But I digress.  This year is the year of the water dragon. Good bye, metal rabbit 🙁 Have this quick paint to celebrate!

The couplet is something my dad recommended, to be a little more interesting than the standard happy new year. Maybe another resolution should be to work on my calligraphy.
